“Give Back” Holiday Party Craft Activity >> No Sew Blankets

Today’s mom’s have little trouble creating beautiful and festive children’s birthday party celebrations but sometimes between our own crazy busy schedules and the quest to throw the this year’s most talked about event, we forget to add the little things that make the day especially meaningful. We think it is important for kids to know how much we love them but equally important for them to understand they are not the center of the universe. Children need to learn and develop  a healthy sense of self which includes compassion and caring of others. What better day to teach this lesson than on the very day they are lavished with gifts. Teach by example – integrate a “Give back” craft activity into your child’s birthday party in addition the the usual birthday fun and party games.

And with the holiday spirit upon us, why wait for your child’s next birthday party. This “Give Back” craft activity would be a wonderful addition to any classroom holiday party and equally brilliant to incorporate into your own kid-friendly holiday celebrations. Continue Reading →

Beading & Jewelry Making Party Planning, Ideas & Supplies

Beading & Jewelry Making Party Planning, Ideas & Supplies

This morning as I was watching the morning news shows, sipping coffee and enjoying our incredible San Diego summer, I felt almost saddened that many Americans will be forced to spend these last few weeks of summer vacation indoors due to inclement weather. So of course this got me thinking. I called the Party Idea {Pros} gang together and posed today’s challenge – Let’s create a fun indoor end of summer gal party that can be tailored to kids, teens, college coeds, or even moms needing a break. After a bit of brainstorming we unanimously decided upon

A Jewelry Making & Beading Party

Jewelry Making Party Goals

Create playful, stylin’ back to school jewelry or get a jump start on creating DIY holiday gifts

Keep the actual crafting fairly simple so there is plenty of time for sipping, socializing, and nibbling.

Bead Party Inspiration

Before we even began thinking about the party details, we immediately turned to Shopbop (our go to shop for all things trendy) for inspiration. We quickly pulled together this jewelry inspiration board so that when we went looking for beading supplies, invitations, and centerpieces we had a clear direction.

Once we looked at the latest in jewelry designs, we turned to Amazon to see if we could replicate or approximate some of the design features currently being sold by top designers often for hundreds of dollars.

In preparation for the party you might also consider taking a jewelry crafting class in the comfort of your own home

Free, Last Minute Mothers Day Gift / Activity Idea

Free Craftsy Knitting Mini-Courses

No matter how much money you spend on your mom this Mother’s Day, there is no gift that will surpass the gift of time.  So rather that kill this month’s budget, consider spending a few hours with mom and together taking one or more of the free Craftsy mini-courses.  Craftsy mini-courses have the same great content that you’ve come to expect from Craftsy.com, but feature student-led discussions and are shorter in length than regular courses. They are a perfect way to learn new skills with your mom and to decide whether taking more courses together is a perfect excuse to spend more time with together in the future.

Top Free Mini-Courses

  • Know Your Wool: Do you wonder where your yarn comes from? Learn about different types of wool and the individual characteristics of each.

  • The Hand-Painted Cake: Elevate your cake with Erin Schaefgen’s freehand painting techniques. Create beautiful and edible works of art with Erin’s tips and tricks.

  • Creative Quilt Backs: Make the back of your quilt just as interesting as the front! Oh, Fransson! blog author Elizabeth Hartman walks you through everything you need to know to make beautiful quilt backs.

  • Modern Buttercream: Learn to use buttercream like a pro! Discover the tricks and tips to construct and create a beautifully finished buttercream cake.

  • Short Rows: Don’t fall short because you find short rows intimidating! Learn four different techniques to creating short rows, and discover how they can make shaping a knitted garment a snap.

  • Sewing Machine 911: Give your sewing machine some TLC with the help of this free course. Learn to clean and maintain your sewing machine with tips and tricks taught in this class.

  • QuiltCon Lecture Series 2013: Not able to make it to Austin for the Modern Quilt Guild’s inaugural QuiltCon? Watch some of our favorite lectures from the event, given by Heather Jones, Angela Walters, David and Amy Butler, Jacquie Gering, and Mary Fons.

Since my mom has been trying to get me to knit with her for years, I think we will spend this Mothers Day taking the Know Your Wool, Short Rows, and maybe even the Ins & Outs of Grafting.  And to refresh my knitting memory, I will probably try to squish in a Knit Lab: Projects, Patterns & Techniques class prior to Mother’s Day so I won’t completely embarrass myself .

Best Craft Tool, Ever!

Best_Craft_Tool

Party Idea {Pros} absolute favorite, cannot live without craft tool is (drum roll, please)

3M Scotch Adhesive Transfer Tape ATG 700 Dispenser

Once you get the hang of loading the tape (that truly is the hardest part) you will find yourself using this “gun” constantly.  We have used it to make diy invitations, scrapbooks, favor tags, hang posters and signs, wrap presents  party favors, party decor and even custom framing.  All you do is press the trigger and roll.  The stick is strong and durable.  Trust us — do not waste your time with the mini tape dispensers.  Yes they are lots cheaper but they do no work as well and in the end take way more time. (And yes ladies, our time is precious and we need to calculate its value when we are making purchases!)  Plus, these guns last forever.  Ours is a bit sticky and gummy and scratched up but is still going strong after 10 years!

The tape for the dispenser is hard to find, so be sure to buy at least 6-12 rolls at a time.  There is nothing worse than getting half way through a craft project just to run out of tape:

Scotch Adhesive Transfer Tape, 0.5 Inch x 36 Yards (924.5) | Adhesive Transfer Tape Roll for Scotch Tape Gun , 3/4

Our second most used tool — a paper cutter!
