Retro Paper Straws

...Retro Paper Straws

Retro Paper straws are all the rage.  They not only add a fun vibe to your table decor, they add color and a dash of whimsy.  As you can see we have featured them individually displayed in mason jars in our patriotic theme parties.  Sometimes we even add an antenna ball on top.  For my own son's Bar Mitzvah we topped MLB antenna balls on coordinating straws and used them as place cards at the entrance to party.  Just yesterday, my sister threw a handful of striped paper straws in a paper cup – just the right touch for her Labor Day barbecue.

Both Swoozies and Amazon has a nice collection of retro paper straws.  Consider using the pink and blue polka dot straws for your next baby shower.  We love the mini bat straws and orange and black stripe straws for Halloween parties.  The red and green stripe straws are a must have for your cookie baking holiday parties.  The yellow stars straws would be an adorable adder to a Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Party.  And we believe the yellow & grey stripe straws are elegant enough to use at a chic, vintage chalkboard chic wedding reception. Another idea — choose your sorority colors for your next house party.

One more idea for children's birthday parties … choose a variety of straws and cut them into 1 – 2 inch strips. Now string them together to create cute paper necklaces.  The leftovers can be used for  every day, at lunch and dinnertime.

Mustache (Moustache) Bash Party Planning, Ideas & Supplies

Mustache Bash Party Planning, Ideas & Supplies

We admit it — for months we have been dismissing one of this year's hottest fads, Mustache Mania.  The truth is we just didn't get it.  But it is one of those fads that has definitely grown on us (pun intended).  We love the simplicity of design and actually find ourselves smiling whenever we see a “stache bash” invitation. The magnificent mustache theme is perfect for bachelor and fraternity parties, both and adult and children's birthday parties, retirement parties, and even weddings (check out that fabulous Stache + Kiss Wedding invitation below) .

Even if you don't want everything at your next party to be mustached, adding a touch of “stache” whimsy here and there will undoubtedly product quiet chuckles amongst your guests.  We promise, these little touches will not only be noticed but they will be appreciated.  Not sure that any of you noticed, but if you look closely at our new image on our welcome page, you will find a small mustache inserted under the word {Pros} – yes, we put it there just because it makes us smile!

Grilled Cheesus

Everything "Grilled Cheesus"

What is a Grilled Cheesus?

The term “grilled cheesus” was coined on Season 2, Episode 3 of  Glee. Basically, Finn, the football playing, male lead glee club member, sees the face of Jesus in the score marks  made on a sandwich using his George Foreman Grill — hence ‘Grilled Cheesus.'

Good Things Come in Small Packages — A Party Theme with a Charitable Twist

Good Things Come in Small Packages -- A Party Theme with a Charitable Twist

Good Things Come in Small Packages —

A Party Theme with a Charitable Twist

Recently we came across a question asking for ideas for a “good things come in small packages” themed bat mitzvah.  Seldom do we come across new great theme ideas, so not surprisingly, we were hooked from the get go especially since there seemed to be so many positive ways to incorporate a lovely message into the celebration. Although we have not developed an absolutely complete theme package, this post is fairly comprehensive and covers most elements needed to put together a great party with an emphasis on charitable giving.  This unique party theme would also be perfect for a baby shower, school fundraiser, quinceanera celebration, or birthday party or retirement party for anyone of petite stature.

The Charity (or Mitzvah) Project

I love the idea of knitting tiny hats and booties and blankets for neonatal units. In fact even if you don't knit, it might be worth learning! Either join a group already doing knitting, start a group of your own, or find another way to support these wonderful and fragile children arriving in the world as the tiniest of G-d's gifts. Look at the following organizations for inspiration or maybe contact your local hospital's neonatal intensive care unit to see if it has any particular needs:

Knit for Bliss
The Preemie Project
Hadassah Hospital
Baby Charity Knitting Patterns

Invitation Idea – The Smaller the Better!

I like this Lavender reverse card by William Arthur since it is only 3.5″ x 5″ yet can hold all pertinent celebration information plus a small motif symbol on the top. I centered the text and used a second font for the name, used brown ink and added the lavender and brown Circles and Stripes liner. This particular card is engraved — a special touch which compliments the emphasis on quality in this theme. Consider packing the invitation and any other necessary cards,(ie response cards and envelopes, evening celebration cards) into a small deluxe gift box lined with plumped tissue paper so the cards are inset into the tissue paper. Then wrap the box in personalized wrapping paper.  Affix a mailing label. I can't think of a more perfect way to set the tone for the theme good things come in small packages! Yes, it is a bit over the top but my motto is always think big and then scale back, i.e. instead of a box you might use a bubble mailer.

Consider personalizing a contemporary style business card as your invitation.  If there is too much information to include on one card, just stack numerous cards in the box.

Centerpiece and Party Favor Ideas

Bonsai is the art aesthetic miniaturization of trees …

Camellia "Hot Flash"      Rock Cottoneaster      Dwarf Crepe Myrtle

Orange Citrus Bonsai Tree      Satsuki Azalea      Flowering White Jasmine

To add more mass to your centerpiece consider displaying your bonsai and various other small items on a tiered display rack.

The third tier can be filled with any of dozens of miniature favors.  Here are my favorites …

Cheesecake presents       individual towel cakes       bloembox flower seeds

Individual present cheese cakes (visually fabulous but over the top expensive)

Individual towel cakes,

Bloembox flower seeds

Also consider polka dot favor boxes tied with beautiful  midori organdy ribbon and filled with a single  personalized Hershey Kiss and a small tag saying something like “Hadassah Hospital Neonatal Care Unit thanks you with a kiss.”

Food Ideas

Skip the large plated dinner. Just serve lots of courses with bite size morsels (tapas, tea sandwiches, small plates) throughout the night.

For dessert serve cupcakes, or mini brownie pops, or two tiered mini cakes.
